Jason Noble benefit

Well, I would urge all of you to go buy the print set that twelve artists, myself included, put together to help offset Jason Noble's (Rodan, Rachels, Shipping News) cancer treatment costs, but the entire edition of 100 sets sold out in under 12 hours! $20,000 raised that quickly. Mighty impressive, and our thanks to all of you who donated. For more info on the set, please see here: http://www.giveforward.org/JBNprintcollection/.

Jeff Mueller put the project together, and prints were created by Nick Butcher, Mat Daly, Dan Grzeca, Dan MacAdam, Dan McCarthy, Jeff Mueller, Jay Ryan, Kerri Sancomb, Diana Sudyka, Brady Vest, Steve Walters, and myself. All packaged in a letterpressed folio created my Mr Mueller.

Since many of you may never see the actual prints, here's a peek at the one I created, titled "Everything Changes", inspired by the lyrics and artwork of Rodan's Rusty LP. And that is, of course, Jason's native Louisville in the background.

Get well soon, Jason.

Shellac, Shannon Wright, and others are also playing benefit shows for Jason soon. More information on the shows, as well as a journal of Jason's progress can be found here:

New caseyburns.com on its way!

I just spent today redesigning the look of caseyburns.com. Once my friend Jereme has had time to work on the coding of the site, it'll be a nice-looking, easy-to-use online store and portfolio. Here's a preview of what it will look like.

Books I'm in. Go buy them.

I've been lucky enough to have my work in several books in the past few years, including a couple of great ones in the past couple of months. If you haven't seen these yet, check em out.

Gig Posters: Rock Show Art of the 21st Century, by Clayton Hayes, Quirk Books. Clay's this crazy Canuck who got all of us poster artists organized through his amazing online archive of posters, gigposters.com. He's the reason many of us are making a living off our art these days, and I can't thank the guy enough. He just edited this first collection of posters, and it's a handsome tome. Highly recommended.

Also out there somewhere (if anyone can help me get a copy, I'd be very grateful) is this 720 page book that accompanies the museum show Sonic Youth: Sensational Fix. The exhibit, which includes some of the work I've done for them in the past, is slowly moving from museum to museum in Europe. A friend sent me photos of my pages in the book.

And here are some older books I'm in, still worth checking out:

The Art of Modern Rock, by Paul Grushkin and Dennis King, Chronicle, 2004

The Art of Musical Maintenance

Panda Meat, edited by Frank Kozik, Last Gasp, 2005

Simple Screenprinting, By Annie Stromquist, Lark Books, 2004

Burns Vs. Rust

Okay, if you've ever owned a VW bug, you know that rust on the floorpans is always an issue. The 67 I had in high school was so rusty my friend Jeramie popped the passenger seat off the floor when we went over some railroad tracks on Highland Lake Road and he and the seat fell into the back seat of the car. My "new" 67 luckily has only surface rust on the pans. No holes. It looks worse than it actually is. Today I started grinding the rust and paint off, and will soon coat it with Por-15 to stop it from coming back. Eventually I'll be putting in new flooring, carpet and rubber mats. Here are some photos from today's rust madness.

Yay for progress. Starting to see some bare metal.

Shirts, shirts, shirts

Seems like all my work lately has been t-shirt designs, ranging from famous rock bands to local bars and restaurants.  Here's a new shirt design for the Matchbox Lounge on Division in Portland.

Art and Cars.

So, my buddy (and insanely talented artist) Dan Grzeca finally talked me into starting a blog. Here goes. I've got a couple of new art prints coming in the next couple of weeks ... portraits of Muhammad Ali and Billie Holiday. Printed by Handsome Dan Grzeca, and on their way to me soon for signing and numbering. I recently did some t-shirts for Michael Jackson, Green Day, Nirvana, and the Jonas Brothers, but I'm not allowed to post them here, so use your imagination.  What else? I just bought a 67 VW beetle, and restoring it will take up all my non-art time this summer. I may stray from art-related posts and digress into VW restoration progress reports on here from time to time.

On the art front, here are pics of a t-shirt design and an ad design I did recently for Pine State Biscuits, a biscuit shop in Portland that's owned by three fellow North Carolina expats, Walt, Kevin, and Brian. They went to NC State, which explains their red and white color choices ... me, I went to UNC. Go Heels.

And on to the car stuff.  Here's my new 67 beetle. The roof rack was all rusty and grey primer, and the wood slats were bleached grey, so I sanded and refinished the wood in a nice deep red mahogany, and sanded and painted the metal frame a white enamel to match the wheels. It turned out pretty nicely. The madness begins!
